Pros• First Trek title on the PSX and it’s about time• Appeals to non-Trekkies • Being able to bypass the training mode • Takes place in The Next Generation universe |
Cons• Star Trek shooters do not have a good track record• Will only capture the attention of Trekkies, like that freak woman who attended jury duty in her red ensign uniform • Training exercises are extremely frustrating and sometimes overly difficult, especially when you can’t bypass them to jump head first into the missions |
Bottom LineA stiff Romulan ale is just the courage incentive needed before heading out on this journey and another cool Romulan ale will appease the spirits of every returning pilot. Captain’s log, stardate: 54211.82. This is Captain Jean Luc Picard of the U.S.S. Enterprise, Lieutenant Commander Worf and I have assembled an elite team of fighters to pilot the Federation’s latest and most advanced single-fighter craft. These fighter pilots will be placed into extreme adverse scenarios where they will encounter the likes of Klingons, Romulans, and the ever-determined Borg, just to name a few. Lieutenant Commander Worf and I feel that these select few of the Federation's best will be up to the task at hand and will do, not only the Federation, but the entire universe proud. After undergoing rigorous training exercises to prepare our pilots, Lieutenant Commander Worf and I will send our young heroes into the depths of space to investigate strange anomalies, defend the Federation against alien threats, and uncover the mysterious rift that has opened space in the Beta Quadrant. Along the way, main missions will be compounded with sub-missions, secret missions, turret missions, and dual pilot missions. In all, we expect these brave souls to endure at least twenty missions as they battle through hostile alien environments, asteroid fields, and dangerously close to the universe’s most powerful naturally occurring foe, the event horizon of a black hole. Our pilots will be aided in their quest with over ten unique weapons that range from gravity bombs and morning stars to proximity mines and a repel beam energy lance. Also, eight different ships will be at their disposal including the Valkyrie class strike ship, which is one of several recently approved ships by Federation superior, Paramount. Each single-seater is equipped with the latest Federation technology allowing our pilots to perform spectacular attack and breath-taking evasive maneuvers, like barrel rolls, quick-response turns, full movement forwards, backwards, and complete reversals; a two-pilot deathmatch will also be included in their exercises to build confidence and strengthen these maneuvers. We’ve received word from Bothan spies that all our enemies are endowed with true squad AI, meaning that they will perform tactical and evasive maneuvers such as protecting the wingman, splitting formation, and performing loop-d-loops. What this means to our pilots is that they will encounter the most fearsome foes that the Federation has ever had to engage. Lieutenant Commander Worf and I will be there every step of the way, at least in each pilot’s headset, to aid in whatever way we can. These fine recruits will be witness to a fast-paced shooting frenzy as they battle with unrelenting forces hell-bent on destroying all that we hold true. I do not envy these men and women, but I am sure as hell proud and elated to have them fighting for our team. If all goes well, much as Lieutenant Commander Worf and I predict, then our heroes will be welcomed home to a universe reveling in peace and harmony. Good luck to all. |
