3rd Post! December 22, 2008

What a weekend! This was really the kick start of the holidays for me. Vancouver was blanketed by snow--I know, BIG DEAL(!!) if you're from anywhere else in Canada or big chunks of the US, but for us folks in the warmest and wettest urban center in the country, getting several inches of snowfall this close to Christmas IS a big deal, trust me! My wife and I also attended our first Christmas get together with friends and that was a great party with a collection of people ranging in ages from 8 months to parents in their 70's. (The Chief and Athena were at the party too, so that was pretty sweet for this BSG fanboy!) And then last night, after a solid snowed-in day of gaming...I've gone back to the final stages of God of War II to finally complete the game--don't ask! I get busy with new stuff to review every week and it's taken me forever but man, I love God of War!!! Anyone that is fully enamored with the new Prince of Persia and its simplified design, should really take another look...

Exclusive No More

Don’t you hate it when a game you want comes out exclusively for a console you don’t own? Capcom has done that in the past, but they say they’re not going to do it anymore. Capcom has stated that all major titles launched during the next fiscal year or thereafter will be developed as multiplatform games. So people who only have one console and are awaiting the next big thing from Capcom won’t feel left out in the cold. Capcom has already started showing their multiplatform approach by moving former exclusives to new platforms. Dead Rising is coming to the Wii, and of course Resident Evil is coming to the Xbox 360 for the first time. Additionally, the publisher slash developer is “aggressively going after acquisition and partnership opportunities if they benefit our goal of creating gaming content with universal market appeal.” With the majority of sales for Dead Rising, Lost Planet, and Resident Evil 4 coming from overseas, it’s no wonder Capcom is looking for development partners outside of Japan.

May The Force Be With You

Are you looking forward to the release of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed tomorrow? The Force Unleashed has set a new record for the fastest demo to one million downloads on the Xbox Live Marketplace. It took just eight days to reach the milestone. The previous record holder was Too Human, which took nine days to top one million downloads. Between the 360 and PS3 demos, The Force Unleashed has been downloaded 2.3 million times. But remember, once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny.

Oh, Canada

Could a Canadian Games Expo be just over the horizon? Well, apparently the organizers of the Leipzig Games Convention are looking to host an event in North America and Canada could be it’s home. Reports are still unconfirmed, but with development hotbeds in Vancouver, Montreal, and Toronto it would be a great boost to the local industry. We’ll be keeping an eye on this one.

Plasmid Fix

Need your BioShock fix until the PlayStation 3 version and the movie come out? Well, apparently you’ll be able to get that fix on October 2nd when the PS3 demo goes live. The Rapturous adventure on the PS3 version adds Survivor mode and trophy support. Man, I loved this game and I can’t wait ‘til this one comes out.

Bad To The Bone

Are you spending too much time in bad company? Well, now you’ll be able to spend even more time with Battlefield: Bad Company. The game’s leader boards have expanded to 500,000 from a mere 50,000 and new codes will allow you to unlock three weapons that were previously only available by achieving certain goals. Additionally, a new update and map pack are on the way.

The New Age

The recent news that Ensemble Studios will be closing after the release of Halo Wars makes us wonder if it also means the end of Age of Empires. According to Kevin Unangst, the director of Games for Windows, there’s still hope, as confirmation came on a blog posting stating that Microsoft has retained the rights to the Age Of Empires series, and that they’re still interested in the “future potential” of the franchise. Hopefully this means Age Of Empires 4…some day.

Avenging Force

Iron Man director Jon Favreau has gone on the record about his plans for an Iron Man sequel. The director, who also plays Tony Stark’s driver Happy Hogan, is thinking about both Iron Man 2 and 3, and may introduce themes in the second movie that won’t be wrapped up until the third. Villains being considered for the movies include Crimson Dynamo and the Mandarin, although Favreau hasn’t quite worked out how to handle the Mandarin’s supernatural nature. We may see an expanded role for Jim Rhodes, so that could mean the introduction of War Machine, and we might even see Tony Stark’s alcoholism addressed. Both Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. have expressed their desire to stay with Iron Man long term, and it sounds like a lot of good ideas are being kicked around, including both shooting in IMAX and 3D. We can’t wait, and don’t forget the Iron Man DVD and Blu-ray will be out September 30th.

Uphold The Law

The OCP are set to return to protect the public. It looks like a new Robocop movie is on the way with The Fountain director Darren Aronofsky. Apparently, the film won’t be a direct sequel and will feature an R rating like the original two films. All Aronofsy is really saying at this point is that the setting won’t be anywhere that’s recognizable.

Lost And Found

Just like her character, Starbuck, in the Battlestar Galactica episode, You Can’t Go Home Again, Katie Sackhoff is lost and found. Or at least she’ll star in the new series pilot, Lost And Found for NBC. Sackhoff will play an LAPD detective who is sent to work on John Doe cases after clashing with superiors.

War & Peace

Of course, we’re all waiting for Warhammer Online: Age Of Reckoning to open for business on September 18th. But, while we’re all waiting to play, we can read it now. Empire In Chaos, the first novel based on Age Of Reckoning, has been released. Empire In Chaos tells the story of a woman who escapes from her destroyed village and ventures on a quest to save the Empire. You know, I don’t think I’ve heard that plot in a fantasy story before. The book was written by Games Workshop author Anthony Reynolds.

Ramsay Reigns

Can’t get enough of Gordon Ramsay? You know the insane, belligerent, Michelin star chef of Kitchen Nightmares and Hell’s Kitchen who intimidates and belittles restaurateurs by telling them how incompetent they are? Well, Fox has made a deal with Ramsay for two more seasons of both shows as well as a blind commitment for a third series. F@#*ing hell.

Instant Collector’s Item

Well, it’s happening just like we predicted. As we reported earlier, the recalled issue of All-Star Batman & Robin The Boy Wonder number 10, due to profanity, has turned up on Ebay. Despite requests from DC Comics to destroy the issue, many have surfaced on the online auction site, with some asking for a hundred bucks or more.
