Rune

This one transports gamers back in time to the Dark
Ages, where Vikings ruled the northern lands and savagery
was the way of life. Human Head and Epic Games are
developing this epic challenge of melee combat and
exploration. You assume the role of Ragnar, a young
rugged Viking warrior, in his quest to uncover an
evil perpetrator who is annihilating the Viking population.
Throughout this story line and active environment,
you will be forced to fend for your life against Nordic
creatures with the use of the only known weapons,
in this darkest of Dark Ages. Given its time frame,
it is safe to assume that most of the combat in this
game will be melee based (swords and, hopefully, big
ass, skull cleaving axes). Melee combat is one more
area of gameplay that has not been mastered. Die By
The Sword was a good try, but hampered by awkward
controls. Other games, such as Dark Vengeance end
up being pretty much just plain button mashing. Again,
this is one area where using a licensed engine may
pay off. The developers should be able to spend more
time on refining combat depth and control. Rune will
contain both single and multiplayer modes of play,
where you can fight cooperatively, or independently
as a Viking warrior throughout many out-door and cavern
like setting.
