Navy
SEALs
Developed by: Yosemite Entertainment
Published by: Sierra FX
Genre: Squad-based Tactical Simulation
Estimated Release: On Hold
Navy SEALs was to be a squad-based tactical simulation
and not just a mere first-person shooter. Word was,
gamers would be assuming the role of team commander,
with a wide range of realistic combat experiences
that members of the elite soldier group might come
across in the fire line of duty. You would get to
choose your team members, select appropriate gear
and equipment needed for the mission and issue strategic
orders to ensure a successful mission.
Former
seal, Richard Marinko, author of the Rogue Warrior
series was working in conjunction with the Yosemite
team in creation of Navy SEALs. Sounds a little like
Rainbow Six, No? Navy Seals was one of the projects
put on hold when Sierra restructured in February of
98. Everyone is waiting for word from head office,
but most people concur that the property was too interesting
and too far into development to be scrapped. It would
seem to make sense for the title to be shifted to
the Sierra FX development house, responsible for Half-Life
and Starseige, and completed.
As
usual, it seems that for now, the warriors are chomping
at the bit and biding their time while the diplomats
and bureaucrats bicker amongst themselves. Then again,
how many first person, special forces games do we
really require?
