Pokemon Gold and Silver
Nintendo/ Nintendo/ Gameboy Color

Pokemania

One of the many ways to separate the lovers from the mere doers in this industry---the big, game-luvin' kids (regardless of age), as opposed to the surly, clock-punching grumblers who somehow got locked into "covering" games---is to look and see which ones lovingly carry their portable game systems around. You see them in first class or coach, utterly soul-sucked into their little purple beeping, booping box, often jacked in with headphones for good measure. The real die-hards even have special accessories they don't leave home without (sticker on a travel bag: You Will Take My Nyko Worm Light When You Pry It From My Cold, Dead Fingers). It's sweet, and yes...it's a little sad, too. So go ahead and make your jokes. You'll be laughing out of other and various holes when we're both stuck in jury duty, me deep in some Zeldanian dungeon, you on your fourth re-read of somebody's discarded copy of Soap Opera Digest, yeh bollicks.

Was there ever even a question? Pokemon Gold and Silver dominated the E3 Portable Space-Time Continuum, and even people who never came within six parsecs of the Nintendo booth came away convinced they'd seen Gold and Silver, the way people in third-world countries talk themselves into seeing the form of Saint Lucita in the folds of burritos. Whither Silver and Gold? For starters, the Poke-thing population is now at a hefty 250, so you can forget any plans you had for night classes in how to talk to human females. You can even import your old Pokewhatsits from previous Red and Blue versions.

Gold and Silver also sport an internal clock, so you'll only be able to spot certain Pokejobbers in the appropriate portions of the diurnal course (Nocturnal emergence! It's not just for preteens anymore!). And what's this? Pokepersons can now breed, so captured male & female Pokemon can have little Pokegrubs (we may get a T rating out of this franchise yet).

Warlocked
Nintendo/ GBC

A one/two player high-fantasy RTS for the GBC, and not a moment too soon, either. It's cool to send some of your little guys to mine gold while other little guys attack the enemy's towers, but it's cooler still to wander off, find a baby dragon, raise it like a winged pit bull and eventually cut loose with the adult version.

Perfect Dark
Nintendo/ GBC

This high-end GBC title doubles as tech showcase for the Game Boy, as it features Rumbling, Game Boy Printer and Game Boy 64 Pak compatibility (for transferring data between N64 & GBC versions). Also look for two-player deathmatches, sampled speech and an FMV intro.

SNK MP3 Player
SNK/ NGPC

It stings like hell to admit it, but the availability of a licensed MP3 player now makes the Neo Geo Pocket cooler than the Game Boy Color. Nintendo's response to this blatant challenge? Hide and tell us how cool the Game Boy Advance will be, some day, by golly.

Songboy
Songboy.com/ GBC/ NGPC

Just when we thought SNK was the coolest, along comes Songboy.com to the rescue, offering their own MP3 music player for both Game Boy and Neo Geo Pocket Color.

Black and White
Interplay/GBC

The most eagerly anticipated GBC title of the show. Actually, there's no handheld version of Black and White (you should have seen your face for a second there, though, hooooo!).

Nyko Shock & Rock
Nyko Technologies/ GBC

A chunky, cool little add-on with its own 10-hour rechargeable battery that gives your Game Boy Color or Neo Geo Pocket more amplified-stereo speaker oomph and vibration capability for all games. As if the GBC/NGP didn't own enough of your soul already.

Tomb Raider
Eidos/ GBC

Now, now, don't give us that look---as Tomb Raider for GBC can be thought of as "Out of This World"-esque, it's actually a new game experience. No jubbling, though.

Metal Slug 2nd Mission
SNK/ GBC

The Metal Slug franchise provides action as good as side-scrolling shooting gets, as good as the classic games we grew up on. The fact that it's take-anywhere on the Neo Geo Pocket Color does our hear good.

Zelda Tri-Force Series
Nintendo/ GBC

A complete new series of handheld Zelda games with interlocking story-lines which seems an almost unfair way to "encourage" gamers to buy three cartridges, but we'll gladly take any more legends of Zelda.
