Iwata Considering Offering New Super Mario 3D Land Stages as DLC

Nintendo appears to be deadly serious about moving into the DLC world, as boss Satoru Iwata has been discussing the possibility of Super Mario DLC.

Iwata mentioned that with most Super Mario games, they get released and gain critical acclaim, but then drift away as fans complete them. He discussed DLC levels as a way of retaining fan’s interest in the titles. One example he gave was for Super Mario 3D Land, which many users quickly finished.

“Even if the game had the sales potential to other new consumers, they rarely actually bought it because the consumers who already had bought it would never talk about it again and the game would be considered an old one,” he said. ”Having said that, what if we could provide add-on content through the network? … This is the idea of supplying new stages to Super Mario users who want to play the game more but have completed the game and lost interest in the existing stages. This will not only give us new profits but will lengthen the life of a product, in that it will never be out of fashion and can keep attracting public attention as long as many people play it.”

Sorry, but DLC is just a pathetic attempt at sucking money out of people. Take the time to release a full product, and stop supporting lazy and/or greedy developers. If Nintendo is going to be putting out any DLC, it should all be free, otherwise they've sold out just as much as the rest of them.

I disagree with you. At least in Nintendo's case. They have already put out a full product in the case of Super Mario 3D Land. Clearly these new levels would all be new levels. If they're going to be putting manpower behind making this new content to keep fans interested in their product, why shouldn't they make some money off it? Nintendo has said many times one of their main priorities (and a reason they haven't done DLC up until now) is that they feel the consumer should get the full product that they pay for. I trust Nintendo to do DLC right and not go the way of say a fighter and try to sell alt costumes for a dollar, many of which are already on the disc. If Nintendo starts doing on disc/cart DLC, then I'll agree with you.
